Wal+Mart Domain Names

Wal+Mart uses VeriSign's Digital Brand Management Services for its domain name management. This page lists the names that Wal+Mart possesses, and details the process used to find them.

Let's begin with a list of commonly used Wal+Mart host names. Save the list as walmart_hosts.

wal-mart
walmart.com
walmartstores
wal-martstores

Then get a list of each and every TLD from IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.

$ wget http://data.iana.org/TLD/tlds-alpha-by-domain.txt

Remove the first line, which is a comment/timestamp, with sed.

$ sed -i '1d' tlds-alpha-by-domain.txt

Then use Perl to change all of the TLDs to lower case.

$ cat tlds-alpha-by-domain.txt | perl -ple 'tr/A-Z/a-z/' > tlds

With the requisite files, a simple bash script iterates through each TLD for each host name.

        for j in `cat tlds`; do
                (whois $i.$j | grep -q "Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.") &&
                echo "$i.$j" >> walmart_domains

There are surely more domains owned by Wal+Mart, though the specific grep used here assures they are under VeriSign's watchful eye.
